Oregon, by a charming, little, historic
>town called Jacksonville. You expect to see Wyatt Earp walking down
>the street any day now. We like it a lot.
> I also like that I've been able to satisfy another dream of
>mine, being a novelist. I had had 3 non-fiction books published on
>various forms of film acting but had always wanted to sell my stories.
>Well, about three years ago, St. Martin's Press bought my first novel
>ALMOST GRACELAND, followed by the buying my second, FINAL EXPOSURE.
>This one's a mystery and was just released about a month ago. I'm
>currently finishing up rewrites on another they are interested in
>publishing and have a new one started. It keeps me off the streets.
> When I'm not writing, I like to take advantage of the many
>golf courses in this area. I've also got a great bunch of guys that I
>play with here so, I'd say things worked out pretty darn well.
> Thanks for this little tromp down memory lane, Phil. Things I
>haven't thought of for a while. I hope life has been good to you as
>well.
> If you get a chance to look at my books, please enjoy. I also
>wish a very merry Christmas and a grand new year for you and yours.
>
>All the best,
>
>Steve Carlson

I found M.D. Maupin died April, 1990. (Directory says 1988).

I also found Robert L. Pennock died 2004. Wasn't he a track star for East? (I don't see his name in the directory).

There were 611 names in the list -- from all of Wyoming. I'm not up to looking through 1944 birthdays.

If anyone wants to see scans of the home rooms from McCormick Jr. High in spring 1960, or from Churchill 1951-57, drop me an e-mail: philwyoming@yahoo.

Phil White 307 742-9363
Thanks to Joel and Phil for writing about our BFF Reunion 45.

I remember you both well (though neither of you probably remembers me at all).

Still, I'm at a loss as to why more of our classmates haven't written already to thank the BFFs for having the guts to go through with the reunion that made so many of us happy.

And, I'm totally baffled as to why there were so many classmates who weren't there -- for whatever reason.

Then, there's the elusive St. Mary's group (you know who you are) who chose to separate itself from the rest of us on Sunday morning (and before?). Did you all just want to hang out with people you could better connect with, Or was it a deliberate snub to the rest of us? Care to share your opinions?

If by sharing our feelings and opinions we can make our 50th reunion the best possible, then let's do it.

Get the juices flowing, connect with each other, network until we get it right. Don't wait until it's too late to get the job done.

Oh, and find all those old pictures! After all, everybody has a story.

Judi Huffer Flett jjfletaz@earthlink.net

How come You that I talked to seemed to remember the mischief that I got into, even as far back as 3rd grade???

It was fun, and good to see all of you in good health, good memories, (home runs in Little League), and I enjoyed the photos of kids, classes, grand-Kids, and yearbook.

Thanks again for organizing a nice weekend.

Joel Monson

Dear Classmates,

August 1 will be here before you know it, so we wanted to pass on a few updates to help make the weekend run as smooth as possible.

If you are flying in to Denver, renting a car away from the airport area will be considerably cheaper. Shuttle busses run to various motels, etc. where you can rent a car. Of course this is just a suggestion. Many people may be arriving on Friday so if we know your arrival time maybe some of you would like to carpool to get a car or ride up to Cheyenne.

The special room rate at Oak Tree Inn is good only until June 15.

Remember to bring pictures, yearbooks and other memorabilia from High School and remember to bring pictures of your family!

Also, we would like everyone, whether you are coming or not, to send in a short resume to share with our group. It will be sort of a quick icebreaker if we know something about your past before we get together. This can also be added to the class web page “What we’ve been doin” page later. www.cheyenne63.com

Remember, no reservations are required for the functions but we sure would like to know if you, and yours, are coming. Picture nametags (cheaters) would be fun to have but we need a little time to put them together before the event. Or, of course, you can just drop in, that’s fine too.

There are still some people we have not been able to locate, or can’t find a current address for. If you have any idea where any of these people are please contact them yourselves, or let one of us know so we can make contact... Joan Bennett, Mike Culver, Rita Hamilton, Richard Krueger, Mike Maupin, Carol Murphy, Penny Rex, Polly Sargent, Petra Kleinermann. We will have a current roster of all the classmates we have found available, or I can always email that to you (the program is in Excel).

Looking forward to seeing ALL of you in August!!

I read with interest Lloyd Hashimoto's recently posted comment in Yakkety Yak. I recall early years (pre - High School) sock Hops being hosted free admission by one of the local radio stations. Be that as it may, Lloyd's concerns still warrant addressing.

The other letter by Pat McGinley Burdick also addressed a need to attempt to promote interaction between former classmates.

This was at least a part of the incentive in activating this website, and in posting the "What We've Been Doing" section. This section was meant, not just for sharring accomplishments, but to point out similarities and shared interests with classmates (as well as assist with conversation starters). The success of this section continues to require the input of all.

In reference to Lloyd's other comment regarding his feelings as an outsider during high school years, I think he might be surprised to find that a goodly portion of his classmates also felt like outsiders too for a lot of varying reasons (socio-econimic; wrong figure type; acne problems etc. etc. etc). Teen years were full of feelings of inadequacy for many, if not most of us.

I personally found the last reunion to be a gathering of reacquainting with classmates and mingling old times, with a sharing of who we are now. Advanced age and maturity; mortality of classmates we've lost, and the recognition of our own mortality seemed to heighten the important characteristics and feelings.

I truly believe it is the interest of all people assisting with the reunions to do everything possible to add to the comfort and enjoyment of all attendees, and would be more than happy for any assistance and/or suggestions to that end.

Barbara Hunter Ross

(The following was received in late October, but very worthy of being posted now...Rick from The Committee)

Dear Vici:

Thanks for the invitation to attend the reunion meeting. While I'd love to be there, it's hard for me to do on a week night.

I thought the one and only reunion I attended (the last one) was planned and executed extremely well.

As far as ideas, I've been remiss in that here I've let it get down to the last minute and haven't been giving it any thought. I did check out a couple of web sites and although several ideas that they mentioned were done at the last reunion, there were a couple more that sounded interesting.

At http://www.reunionlocation.com/htm/class.html they suggested a "Hi Ho Silver" theme with a western theme food, hay rides and decorations. There are also some GREAT ideas at http://www.stretcher.com/stories/980521a.cfm (time capsules made up of 45's, copies from the yearbooks). They said to go to www.history channel.com to get stories about 1963.

I also know every copy of the "Tribune" and "Eagle" are on micro fische at the history museum which would be more localized. They also suggest photocopying a yearbook and decoupaging each table with miscellaneous photos covered by clear heavy plastic tablecloths or photocopy LP covers and intersperse them with class photos.

Of course, we don't want a carbon copy of the last one, but our pictures on the buttons and our senior photos on the projector are a couple of things I think should be done again. I wasn't able to go on the tour and I thought that was an outstanding idea, but here again, can it be changed up and still be effective?

I went by myself to the last reunion, which was hard to do. Since it had been 40 years, there were only a few people I remembered and likewise only a few remembered me. I tried very hard to "work" that crowd and for the most part, a lot of people didn't want to really talk to anyone they didn't come with or budge from their seats. I can't help but wonder why some were there.

I think this would be the most successful reunion ever if a way could be figured to get the attendees to actually talk to one another--maybe some games like the cake-walk theme (how about everyone sitting in the 3rd chair at dinner trading with the person sitting in the 5th chair at the table behind them and the person in the 1st chair trading with #6). I think it would be more fun to try and be as interactive as possible. This might mean "playing" after dinner rather than dancing which also alienates people.

I've had another thought I'd like to pass on. How about taking group pictures of everyone who attended each grade school, each junior high and each high school. I think this would be a wonderful opportunity to spark a memory.

I attended St. Mary's in kindergarten only--that was the last year the old school was used. I don't have a lot of memories other than spending most of my time in the coat closet and when part of the ceiling fell down right beside us as we were lining up to go home. Of course, Sister Kaylin told us we weren't to tell our parents and of course, that's the first thing I told my Mom. I only know of one other person who was in my class, Judy Huffer, and it would be fun to talk to others who were also.

I think it's important now that we're getting older to stir up memories that have been long forgotten.

Please let me know what you come up with and I'll be glad to help.

Rick Ammon addressed the issue by stating that the site has been up for 5 years now and there haven't been any complaints lodged. We will most certainly remove any data any individual has any concerns about, all they need do is send a request to Committee@Cheyenne63.com.

Vicki Foster requested the floor prior to continuing with the second item on the agenda. She read her written response to a telephone request by Bob Peel (at the suggestion of the committee) that although she resigned as committee chair, would she consider continuing to remain as a member of the committee. Bottom line was that she would prefer not to remain with the committee, but she did agree to share the responses she received from the October mailing with the remaining group.

2nd agenda item - Rather than relying on the response of a sampling of committee members in regard to a 45th class reunion, the committee has agreed to poll classmates currently reachable through mail/email to determine the extent of existing interest. To that end, we will be sending out a mailing posing four possible scenarios for consideration by classmates, as well as a request for comments & suggestions. A deadline for responses will be March 1st in order that we can proceed in a timely manner. Barbara will put together a mailing format and email to committee members for acceptance and/or changes and additions. Suzanne will shop for materials for the postal mailing. Ed will be making some contacts in relation to assistance with postal stamping. Bob will check with post office for size and format restrictions to postal mailing. Every attempt will be made to get this mailing out as quick as possible.

Other Business - Notes on the 50th reunion: Rick again reminded us that he has made tenative reservations for the 1st weekend in August (Friday, Saturday & Sunday) at the Cheyenne Depot for the 50th Reunion. Actual reservations will still be required & he suggests they be made 1 - 2 years in advance. Suzanne suggested a possible theme for the 50th to be "On Golden Pond".

Recognition and appreciation was voiced for the work being done by Pamela Braziel Slaughter; Kathy Finch Gude and Judi Flett in updating location information on classmates.

Next meeting (with the exception of a mailing work meeting) has been changed to March 6th 5:00p.m. @ Laramie County Library, Wildflower room on third floor.

Meeting adjourned.

Barbara Hunter Ross

I was very disappointed to read the Jan. minutes of the reunion committee and learn there were those who were in doubt that the reunion should be held this summer.

I feel that the tradition of holding class reunions is very important, especially now as people are retiring. Our lives are changing and, unfortunately, we are all getting older. Longtime friendships are treasures and having the opportunity to get together for this one weekend every five years, (and for some it has been 45 years), is a wonderful event. The empty nesters can have that special time with their old buds on their old stomping ground for just a little while longer.

Who knows how many more of us will be on the Memory page in five years.

Give us the chance to have this time together. Keep going with the plans you have, everything will come together and the turnout will be fantastic.

Keep it simple but keep it going, please.

Kathy Gude

Under threat of abandonment of any 45th year reunion, over 10 class members assembled at Uncle Charlie’s January 16, to discuss alternatives. Several others sent regrets that prior commitments made it impossible for them to attend.

Although I only took a couple sketchy notes, I was asked to report what I had to the website in order to share at least some of what we came up with. My hope is that any other attendees will fill in anything I have missed.

Vici Foster has resigned as leader of the committee.

A review was given, by Rick Ammon and Suzanne Bales Dawson, relating to locations checked into for the reunion. Rick also shared that, looking ahead, he had also taken the opportunity to reserve the Depot for the 50th reunion for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, should we want to use it. It was not available this year.

Taking into consideration cost and other restrictions, possibilities receiving a positive nod were, the Buckle Club with Uncle Fred (of Pine Bluffs) catering a dinner; and Uncle Charlie’s for a brunch.

Those attending were polled as to desired outcome of the 45th year reunion.... none, 1 day, or 3 day. A one day reunion came out the leader.

It was decided to attempt a mailing, polling classmates, in general, as to interest/feasability of attendance of a 45th reunion, prior to continuing on.

Email addresses obtained from the class website will serve as primary contact. Snail mail addresses from website will be used for alternate contact. A March 1st deadline will be given for responses to allow time for follow through.

Next meeting will be held February 7th at 7:00p.m. @ Laramie County Library.

Barbara Hunter Ross

I think my bio already states that I have been a lawyer in Colorado
since 1977, but something that is new is that I was sworn into
the Wyoming State Bar November 2nd.

Colorado and Wyoming do not have reciprocity so I had to take the Wyoming Bar
Exam. That was a daunting and risky endeavor. Risky because of the
personal humiliation that I would have suffered had I failed it, as
many older lawyers many years out of law school are prone to do.

I wanted to be admitted in Wyoming for several reasons not the least
of which is that I grew up in Wyoming and wanted to be a part of the
Bar in Wyoming.

My wife and I built a house in Jackson a few years ago and we now
spend more and more time in Wyoming.

1963 was a great year. By the way, did you know that 1963 was the
last year those buttons on light poles that say "push button to cross
street" were actually connected to anything? 1963 was also the last
year that pecan pie was considered to be good for you. What a great
year.

Class of 63 reunion committee met Thursday, November 29. Those attending were Rick Ammon, Suzanne BALES Dawson, Chuck Kisicki, Dennis Davis, and Vici Foster.

Dennis had contacted the Plains for more information and was told we could reserve a block of guest rooms at a discounted rate of $89 per night. He will continue checking alternative options such as the Legion, the Moose Club, the VFW and check if we can get discounted guest room rates at some of the more affordably priced hotel/motels. He will go back to the Plains again to see if we can still get a guest room rate if we have only the Friday icebreaker and the Sunday brunch there.

Suzanne checked out:
The Buckle Club - $300 rent + $550 deposits (refundable) + caterer + beer/wine and snacks.
The Elks Club - $400 rent + caterer + bartender
The best price for catering was Uncle Fred’s. Suzanne will confirm with them for the night of August 2nd. Seems the Buckle Club is our best option so far. She will contact them for additional information.

Rick reported that The Depot is already booked for 2008; however, he reserved it for our 50th in 2013. Good to plan ahead. He also found that chartering a bus/trolley is $100 per hour + tip to the driver. He agreed to report on possible Downtown Plaza and Tent rental at the next meeting.

Chuck will contact the Knights of Columbus Hall to see if they might have something suitable for the Saturday night dinner.

Also discussed was the small number of classmates showing interest in being part of the committee. Even though we have received a good amount of interest in a 2008 reunion from those residing elsewhere, we all feel unable to proceed without more committee members. Canceling is a strong possibility.

The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, December 11th, 7PM, at the library.

Mike agreed to start creating a database using Rick's data from the Classmate Directory on our web site.

Report of the time/place research was given by Dennis and discussion ensued. Seems prices at the four main hotels with facilities for reunions (Hitching Post, Holiday Inn, Little America, and Plains) have increased to the point of being beyond our budget.

A brainstorming session of alternatives resulted in Dennis, Rick, and Suzanne agreeing to research further options and report back to the committee at the next meeting. It is our hope to find suitable location/s which will allow attendees to gather between reunion events yet be affordable to as many as possible.

Rick said chartered city bus/trolley service from of the more reasonable hotel/motels to a reunion location can be very reasonable and is checking on that possibility.

The first planning meeting for the 45th Class of ‘63 reunion was held Tuesday, October 30th.

Those attending were Rosemary KORTE Torres and Chuck Kisicki representing St. Mary’s; Mike Gregorio representing Central; and Darald Dykeman, Dennis Davis, and I, Vici FOSTER, represented East. Suzanne BALES Dawson was absent due to a death in the family and Rick Ammon was driving the Cheyenne trolley during one of the Halloween Ghost Tours.

It was great to see these classmates again and of course we spent a few minutes “catching up”.

Our first discussion concerned a time and place for the next reunion. It seems more convenient for those attending from out of town when we use a hotel rather than several locations and it’s nice to visit in the lobby and get reacquainted. Due to members being involved with preparation for Fourth of July and Frontier Days activities, it was decided we would stick with our customary early August dates, if possible. Also, late August may be inconvenient for any who are raising school age children and for those who teach or work in the school system.

Dennis volunteered to contact The Hitching Post, The Holliday Inn, Little America, and The Plains Hotel to see what kind of a deal we can get.

Mike volunteered to create a new database for us in Excel so it can easily be used by those on the reunion committee as needed and so that the data can be saved for future reunions.

Up to date contact information is still missing for quite a number of our classmates. Rosemary will be doing some research and try to locate as many as possible. This is a big job for one person. Please look through the list of those unaccounted for on our website at cheyenne63.com and help update the class contact list by providing current contact info on yourself and any other classmates you can. Forward the information to us at committee@cheyenne63.com or by posting to our blog (click Yakkety Yak on the website).

Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 15th, in the Windflower Room on the third floor of the Laramie County Library.

In addition to reports from Dennis, Rosemary, and Mike, we will discuss a few additional roles necessary to do what will need to be done. To ensure a successful reunion, many details and arrangements need to be taken care of.

We have received a good response from those classmates who no longer reside in Cheyenne. Most are looking forward to attending the reunion in 2008; many have not attended in the past.

Your reunion committee will need more help!

If you are in the area and...

...are willing to help plan activities and events, please come to the meeting.
...are willing to help with contacts and communication, please come to the meeting.
...are willing to give your opinions and suggestion, please attend the meeting!
...can give moral support, please come to the meeting!

We need all the help we can get. Please, come to the meeting!

Please don’t hesitate to get involved. We have a lot of work to do but we also have a lot of fun!

Sincerely,

Vici

PLEASE READ.....

This area of your Cheyenne63 web site will be improved with the use of a blog, virtually unknown when YAKKETY YAK was created in 2003.

This new YAKKETY YAK will give a great deal more flexibility for your entries.

It'll be a place where you can find information about upcoming activities such as planning meetings for reunions, details about an upcoming reunion, and the reunion follow up. Of course, you'll be able to contribute ideas about those activities here.

This is your YAKKETY YAK where you can create categories for discussion. It'll be much less limited than the old area. If you want a special category, contact the web master at committee@cheyenne63.com and we'll get it added.

For now, it'll be easier to update your life's information and/or changes in your address and/or email address by senting them to the same "committee" email address above.

We need any information updates about you and other classmates that you have. Thanks for keeping the web site up-to-date.

BTW, "Trackbacks" refers to linking articles from another web site to this and, at this time, it doesn't seem necessary; therefore, Trackbacks is not activated.
<OD>
When you make an message entry, you'll see the following questions at the bottom of the form. Here are the explainations:

    Subscribe to this entry?
Receive email containing responses to the message you post.

    Subscribe to this blog?
Receive email containing responses to any messages anyone posts to the blog.

    Remember me?
When you’ve entered your name, web site info, etc., then it will fill in all that info when you enter your name again.

There's a box in the "Sidebar" to the left that asks the same question. You do NOT need to make an entry to SUBSCRIBE. Just use the Sidebar box questionaire.

I do have to apologize for the blatant advertising at the top of the page.

Type away, you Rat Finks, and use our YAKKETY YAK !
